When the Sacramento Kings basketball team outgrew their temporary arena in the late 80’s, a new facility was planned by the Sacramento Sports Association.
Project Requirements
Since there was no other similar venue in the Sacramento market, the new facility would need to handle a wide range of events outside the normal basketball games. Also, SSA required their own office space, additional space for the King’s management, luxury boxes, multiple food service concessions, locker and training rooms, a restaurant, and a private lounge.
What ACCO Delivered
SSA contacted ACCO for assistance when the plans were still in an early schematic stage. Working closely with Rann Haight Architects, ACCO designed a system that allowed for maximum flexibility to serve trade shows and luncheons of 500 people to rock concerts and evangelist meetings with a full house of 17,000. In addition to this, there was the challenge of simultaneously keeping the patrons comfortable while providing special ventilation for events that include indoor fireworks, tractor pulls, ice shows, circus animal acts, and motocross racing.
Four built up DX systems serve the Main Bowl and Concourse level through a duct system that was integrated into the design of the overhead catwalk network. Seven large package units, recovered from the previous arena, were included in the design as a cost saving. These units serve the offices, support areas, back of the house, ticket offices, and luxury boxes.
